For one thing, we’ve been trying lots of new fruit for my dad. One is called a durian, which is a type of jackfruit. It stinks even before you open it. We had triple-bag it and hide it under the sink. Yesterday we opened it. Vanessa opened the door and all the windows to let the stink out of the house. When you open the fruit, the stink is really incredible. The fruit itself resembles a small white alien. I found it completely repulsive and spit it out. My dad liked it. He said it got better the more you ate.
Vanessa’s mom has made us sticky rice and some sort of rice bread filled with meat called shoipao.
Vanessa’s mom says we still need a few things for the baby, such as something to protect the new infant’s belly.
Unfortunately I am a bit sick, so we spent yesterday in the condo watching historical documentaries (Richard II and Henry VIII). I’m still a bit sick today and mildly concerned my dad is going to be getting bored. Nanay (Vanessa’s mom) is sick also.
Today we were planning to go see Itchyworms, which is Chris Aquino’s favorite local rock band, who are playing in the cowboy bar next to our condo. However I am too sick for such nonsense. We’re planning on going to Corrigedor, the island fortress where the Americans and Filipinos held out heroically against the Japs. We have Vanessa’s family’s children coming here on Saturday for swimming.

My dad arrived Wednesday the 21st and we’ve been rather busy since then. With Gloria, Vanessa’s mom, we went to Intramuros. We spent some time in the old baroque church, which had an organ with 1370 pipes which got my dad all excited. Trivia, he was a pipe tuner. There were many interesting historical paintings of the Spanish and Mexican conquistadors who came to conquer Manila. There was also a very beautiful Japanese garden with hundreds of bonsai. The neighborhood itself is a walled city and somewhat reminiscent of Spain. And we took a tourist trap carriage ride with a horse that bites.
We went to a Filipino handicrafts store. The coolest thing about this store was actually the handmade furniture, which was quite cheap by Western standards. Vanessa and I are going to come back there when we buy a house. My dad got a cool gift which I am forbidden to mention so the lucky recipient in the USA is surprised.
And now the big news…. IT’S A BOY. Vanessa and I were calling it Christina for quite a long time, but she knew it was a boy because her skin wasn’t shiny. She says she knew in her 2nd month actually because her aura was different. Also she didn’t feel pretty while pregnant which a sure sign of a boy, so she says. Also she was more attracted to boy’s clothes.
We had to wait quite a long time at the hospital but when I finally did get to see the ultrasound it was really cool. I could see his beating heart. He was moving around a lot and very quickly too. He’s an active little guy. We saw his boner and gonads so it’s a boy for sure.
Vanessa says that Christopher Jr. has my nose and forehead, although I can’t tell.
Then we went on a baby things shopping spree. I think we saved a lot of money buying here. Vanessa got everything including baby monitors and a doctor kit, plus all the usual… mittens, booties, shirts, diapers, etc. We’re getting the stroller and crib in Jeddah because of airline baggage restrictions.
Incidentally, our condo has a pool with wireless which we’re all enjoying.
My dad is enjoying strange foods including, tonight, dragon fruit. What the hell is that, you may ask. It’s vaguely kiwi-ish. Vaguely. He says he likes Filipino food, and he likes Vanessa and Nanay Gloria. The strangest phenomenon according to him is that we have no hot water. I know this sounds strange but in the tropics it’s really not necessary. Shaving in cold water and high humidity is actually OK, he says.
We spend about 2 hours a day in taxis. This is because Manila traffic is so terrible. I decided I didn’t want to drive in Manila so we canceled the car rental. My dad is amused by the amount of horn-honking that Filipino drivers do.
He also finds the Filipino malls a tad noisy.
So to recap, it’s a boy, Christopher Achilles Teggatz. The next generation of Teggatzes is OK. I was under a little pressure being the last male Teggatz. Why “Achilles”, you may ask. It’s because I was watching the movie Troy while thinking about baby names. Maybe some of his invincibility will wear off on Little Chris.

OK chaps I’m off to the airport but look at these stats for just a second:
Total Sessions: 1913Total Page Hits: 4962
That’s not bad traffic for a blog (1) that’s been running only 3 months (CheetahhhhhhhBlog Mark III that is) and (2) that I mention to nobody except family and friends. I’m still in the dark why anybody besides our family and friends would read this, but cheers to all you people out there in the ether that we don’t know.

ITEM #1
Well everything has officially been ironed out in regard to our vacation arrangements. The Cheetahhhhhhh prefers generally to make things up as he goes along, since the rest of his life as an academic is very highly structured. I mean, once I get my semester schedule, I can tell you exactly where I’ll be and what I’ll be doing for the next 5 months. So in reaction to this hyperstructured existence, I like my holidays to be by the seat of my pants. My sister thinks this is strange and got all freaky-deaky about it when we were in Peru last summer. She thought I was crazy. No no, there’s a method to my madness. Anyway now that I have a wife it has put a new pespective on things so I have planned ahead a little, ie, a day before I arrive. We have a condo booked for 2 months and a car for 1 month. The condo is apparently quite nice with 2 bedrooms and a pool. Van inspected it and liked it for the bamboo motif and its location near Makati, which is the Beverly Hills of Manila apparently. And Vanessa wouldn’t say so directly but I could tell she actually wanted to stay in Manila. So she’s getting her wish. And in any case, the 4 people involved in this holiday–me, Van, my dad, and her mom–are all homebodies. Thus it eventually occurred to me that we’d all be a lot happier with a condo instead of hotels and moving around.
ITEM #2
I know everybody waits with baited breath for T2 updates. Well I’ve started. It’s a hurculean task to add lots of pictures. Actually I taught myself to make web pages, never even read a book on the subject, and most of my “skills” have been gleaned from trial and error. This is my preferred method of learning actually and in the realm of language learning, it’s well-proven to be the best method. However when it comes to web development I have often wondered if there was an easier way to do things. Whenever I see my sister face-to-face I must sit down with her and ask her about this. Anyway for one thing http://teggatz.com/wanderlust.htm has been slightly updated and the frame for our Italian pictures has been added to http://www.teggatz.com/photoalbums, though it will be a while until I actually put the pictures up. I imagine I will be doing this by the pool in our Manila condo.

So the Cheetahhhhhhh went in to the office and flashed his face around for an hour, then shook everyone’s hands and left. The Saudi staff were grumbling that we get almost 3 month’s holiday and they get none. I countered that they have 100% job security (Saudis can’t get fired) and to one of them I pointed out that he spends a lot of time sleeping in the faculty lounge anyway. Heh. So anyway the Cheetahhhhhhh is on vacation until September and God bless.
I fly out to Manila tomorrow. I have been rather disturbed about the potential cost of this holiday. Staying in hotels for 64 days @ $40 a night + 15% tax totals a whopping $3000 which is a lot of scratch, for example. One of my colleagues is an Australian married to an Indonesian girl. He said, just stay with your in-laws. This would be fine by me actually but there are 5 people crammed into a house smaller than my spare bedroom which I’m currently sitting in. He said, that’s Asia for you, it’ll be fun. Maybe for him but I need a little privacy and quiet or I get all mental. But anyway it seems that Vanessa and my last-ditch inspiration to find a condo to rent has paid off… this will save us a bundle and be more comfortable anyway. One of Vanessa’s brother’s friends has a car he’ll rent to us at a fairly reasonable rate. When my dad arrives I think we may take a 2 week road trip and drive around Luzon island a bit. However he may enjoy himself in Manila and not want to leave.
I am certainly glad to be returning to the East. My loyal fans will recall that though I’m none too fond of northern industrialized Asia, nevertheless, Southeast Asia is almost like paradise to me. In particular Thailand… God, I love Thailand… and anyway the Philippines is like Thailand except they speak English and the food isn’t as good (sorry to my wife for that, but it’s true). So I’m very pleased to be returning to the Orient. My favorite author is John LeCarre. My favorite book is The Honourable Schoolboy and in it, the protagonist steps off a plane in Hong Kong and sighs, “Ah, the East!” Well I feel exactly the same.
Anyway the Cheetahhhhhhh will see you all again in a few days, in the Pearl of the Orient.

My teeth have been sensitive for the last few days, so I went to the dentist. I was really worried I had a cavity. No, just a broken filling, which he repaired. The dentist said my teeth are “beautiful jewels/” I suppose he was comparing my teeth to Saudi teeth, which can be really horrific. One of my students, which is quite a nice kid, has visibly rotting front teeth, for example. So compared to that I suppose my teeth are indeed beautiful jewels.
This week I have been expected to report in to the office. At any other university I would be on vacation already. There is nothing whatsoever to do, so I have been bringing my laptop and playing Rome Total War. What a waste of my time though. I mean, I could be in Manila. Well I can’t complain I suppose, considering I’m not doing any actual work. Also I took today off to go in to the dentist. Tomorrow, I’ll pop in for an hour and then I’m on vacation. My flight leaves on Friday. No actual work for the Cheetahhhhhhhh until Sept 10th “w’al hum du li lah” (and thanks be to God).
It is still in the 50C range every day and apparently it’s only getting hotter. Thank goodness I’ll miss it. It’s so hot that when you leave an airconditioned car or building, your sunglasses fog up. For several days now I have been pretty bored and would generally head out to the beaches to do a little diving, but it’s too damn hot. The water is warm like blood, which isn’t bad actually… it’s the sun and dehydration which make it unpleasant. So anyway I’m just hiding indoors like evryone else.

The semester ended with one of my students getting expelled for cheating on the exam, and then I had 2 students who tried to bribe me to change their grade. Does this kind of thing go on here a lot, I wonder? Well, these students weren’t very clever about bribing an American professor because you’d have to offer me quite a lot of cash to even think about it. Even then, the answer would be no. But I would like to see a real, legitimate, tempting bribe. Like $10,000. You’d naturally have to pause and think about that one. The answer would still be no of course but it would be something to talk about.
I got a new Dell XPS laptop and I love it. Graphics run at 160 frames per second. The average graphics card does 20 per second. My game Total War is suddenly incredibly amazing now that the graphics are running.
God actually did try to prevent me from getting the laptop again… it’s a bit of a long story but suffice it to say, I almost didn’t get it.
During the weekend I went to buy my ticket to the Philippines. I got to the mall a bit early and I went to a security guard to ask him when Saudi would open. Now, many Saudis seem to think it’s inconceivable that a white guy should speak Arabic. So here’s what happened:
Me, in Arabic: “What time does Saudia open?”
Guard: “No speakee Engleesh.”
Me, slowly in Arabic: “What time does Saudia open?”
Guard: “No speakee Engleesh.”
Me, very slowly in Arabic: “Time. What time. What time does Saudia open?”
Guard: “No speakee Engleesh.”
“Me, very slowly in Arabic. Literal translation: “O my brother, please listen. This is Arabic.” (Guard’s eyes open wide. The lightbulb went off in his head.) “What time… etc”
Now I found this incident amusing, is why I’m telling you. Also it’s intellectually interesting. It has been well proven by perceptual psychology that often, we hear what we ANTICIPATE hearing, and not necessarily the actual soundwaves themselves. For example, somebody says something very surprising. You say, “What?” You experience a linguistic disconnect because you didn’t anticipate what they said. Well my Saudi security guard never even dreamed that whitey would speak Arabic, so his brain didn’t even process the soundwaves.
Anyway… 5 days to go and I’m off to the Pearl of the Orient.

It was 54C today. That’s 124F and that’s hotter than hell. The Saudi government has a law that you don’t have to go to work when it’s hotter than 50. Like most worker safety laws, it’s completely ignored. Walking around today was like being in an oven. The worst part is that air conditioners can’t really deal with such heat. My apartment is (at best) clammy warm. This is better than the scorching heat outside of course.
